There are many advantages to tracking inventory accurately, including compliance with legal requirements dictated by bodies such as the FDA.
This has resulted in the widespread use of electronic laboratory notebooks and the creation of centralised sample management laboratories, led by big pharmaceutical companies. This brought consistency to screening and allowed highly paid and valued scientists to do science.

As sample management groups started to prepare assay ready plates instead of just assay stocks, sample management systems were introduced to track labware throughout the screening lab workflow.
As assay complexity increased with, for example, the high content screening of biological samples, the need for auditable tracking extended further downstream into the screening laboratories.
This talk will discuss the past, current trends and future developments within sample management not just for Sample banks, but also in screening laboratories.
